The word “calculated” can make you recoil in some instances. When used to describe a person as “calculating,” there is a negative connotation. Particularly, where the C-Suite woman is concerned.
But in the context of your business or personal growth, being calculated is a positive thing! From here forward, let’s think about being calculated as being deliberate, intentional and planned.
December is a great month to stop and assess both your own performance and your company’s. As a member of the C-Suite you have been tasked with specific performance objectives by either your board of directors or your direct report.
An effective leader will benchmark her performance along the way, so the assessment should not reveal any major pitfalls or blind spots. Rather, it should show a positive trend or reveal specific areas for improvement.
As a C-Suite executive, I am deliberate and focused on obtaining results for my clients which, in turn, financially benefits my team and my organization.
At the end of each year I think about how I can create more wins for everyone.
What investments must I make for that to happen? Where do I have to trim fat or under-performing parts of the business?
This part of planning is not a solitary exercise. I usually tap staff, board members and other stakeholders for input. At the end of that brainstorming process a plan emerges that serves as the blue print for the next 12 months.
I’ve also learned over the years that having a plan in hand for your business is not enough. It must be visited often and reviewed with objectivity. A good practice I employ is having mini strategic meetings per quarter to track performance. I am intentional about delivering value for my customers and staying on track with well-thought-out plans is one of the ways I do that.
Finally, as you make your plans at the end of the year, always remember to include some Big Hairy Audacious Goals (“BHAGS) as Jim Collins (of “Good To Great” fame) teaches.
